The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1000 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.
The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter.
This tutor role is within the Some Kind of Nature atelier, which explores architectural responses to the climate and biodiversity crises through posthumanist approaches. By decentring humans, we foreground relationships between human and non-human life, placing care and ecological responsibility at the heart of design. This interdisciplinary atelier brings together students from landscape and architecture.
We are seeking a tutor to work with the M.Arch final year cohort who can connect the atelier's ethos with practical expertise in sustainable architectural design. An interest in posthumanist approaches and openness to narrative and speculative design methods are essential. The successful candidate will be a qualified architect with sound knowledge and experience in the design and delivery of architectural projects from conception to completion. Teaching experience is essential.
Tutors will support students in exploring enhanced biodiversity, low embodied and operational energy, and responsible material choices. These principles are informed by an in-depth relationship to context and the long-term care of buildings and landscapes.
The post holder must be able to:
- Demonstrate strong professional practice experience in architecture
- Bring creativity and openness to unconventional, narrative and speculative approaches
- Support students in translating critical inquiry into technically informed architectural proposals
- Foster a collaborative studio culture grounded in dialogue and care
You will also have exceptional inter-personal and communication qualities, excellent organisational and administrative skills, and a collaborative approach to working. We will also look to you to ensure an excellent student experience through the use of relevant and inspiring learning and teaching.
Informal discussions can be held with Atelier leader Kasia Nawratek via [email protected]
Benefits include: 25 days leave plus Christmas closure and bank holidays (extra 5 days after 5 years of service), travel loan, wellbeing platform, life insurance, access to campus facilities, enhanced parental leave, and a high-quality guaranteed pension.
Manchester Metropolitan University fosters an inclusive culture of belonging that promotes equity and celebrates diversity. We value a diverse workforce for the innovation and diversity of thought it brings and welcome applications from all local and international communities, including Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
We support a range of flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and tailored schedules. Manchester Met is a Disability Confident Leader and, under this scheme, aims to offer an interview to disabled people who apply for the role and meet the essential criteria.
