Sign in Create an accountThe School of Natural Sciences sits within the Faculty of Science, Business and Enterprise, and brings together excellence in biological, chemical, and physical sciences. We are looking to appoint a highly motivated chemical engineer to join our team, contributing to the delivery of high-quality teaching across a range of related courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in chemical and/or process engineering, with particular expertise in process modelling and simulation using industry-standard software such as PRO/II or equivalent packages. Knowledge or experience of biochemical engineering would also be welcomed. Experience in industry or established links with external organisations would be advantageous, as would knowledge and experience in areas such as plant and process design, process safety and control, thermodynamics and analytical techniques.
The successful applicant should be willing and able to offer undergraduate and postgraduate projects that inspire students and give them authentic opportunities to undertake meaningful research. Candidates should hold a higher degree and have experience of teaching and/or training in both the classroom and laboratory. We pride ourselves on the provision of high-quality teaching and welcome candidates with an up-to-date understanding of and engagement with effective teaching and learning methods.
The successful candidate will join an active, teaching-focused School with a vibrant and active research environment. Recent research grants have been awarded to colleagues from both internal and external funding streams. Examples include £10,000 from the Royal Society in solar-cell device physics, £40,000 from EPSRC looking into electronic structure modelling, and industry funding accumulating to approximately £150,000 looking into turning waste from green processes into useful materials.
The School brings together chemical engineers, surface scientists, computational physicists, specialists in drug discovery, renewable energy, water treatments, energy saving technologies, as well as applied ethologists, molecular biologists, veterinary scientists and forensic biologists, offering many opportunities for collaboration. The successful candidate will have opportunities to develop their research interests independently and/or collaboratively as part of the School's expanding research activity.
The School of Natural Sciences is based at the University of Chester's Exton Park campus and has access to teaching laboratories, preparation rooms and research laboratories, as well as high-specification seminar and lecture theatre spaces. The Chester campus is close to Chester city centre and provides excellent facilities for students and staff.
We have close links with local companies including Autichem and Addison, Unilever, Thornton Science Park, and RV Technologies, enabling active research, industry engagement and outreach that enhance the student experience. We also work actively with Sichuan University of Science and Technology in China, delivering our Chemical Engineering BEng course as part of a Joint Institute. Candidates should therefore be willing to engage with the Joint Institute in both teaching and research, and to support the School's commitment to developing meaningful and long-lasting relationships with colleagues in China.
The taught courses of interest to the candidate are delivered within Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Physics, and the successful candidate will report to the Head or Deputy Head of the School of Natural Sciences.
In addition, the post holder will be expected to undertake a postgraduate qualification in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education at the University, unless they already hold an equivalent teaching qualification or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Applications from candidates wishing to work on a part-time basis will also be considered.
