Maritime transport remains one of the most energy-efficient means for transporting goods and raw materials globally. However, it is also a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for around 2.9% of global emissions generated by human activities. As the sector moves towards decarbonisation, alternative fuels are expected to play a key role in reducing its carbon footprint. Despite this, the impact of these new fuels on the performance and reliability of existing lubricant technologies remains poorly understood.
This project aims to investigate the potential impact of alternative fuels on the friction and wear performance of marine engine lubricants. Using bespoke wear-testing rigs and advanced analytical facilities, we will investigate how fuel-lubricant interactions impact friction, wear and overall system reliability under representative engine operating conditions.
We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
What we offer in return:
- 26 days holiday plus approx. 16 Bank Holidays/days that the University is closed by custom (including Christmas) – that's 42 days a year!
- Generous pension scheme plus life assurance – the University contributes 14.5% of salary
- Health and Wellbeing: Discounted staff membership options at The Edge, our state-of-the-art Campus gym, with a pool, sauna, climbing wall, cycle circuit, and sports halls
- Personal Development: Access to courses run by our Organisational Development & Professional Learning team
- Access to on-site childcare, shopping discounts and travel schemes are also available
For further information, please contact Professor Ardian Morina ([email protected]) or Dr Cayetano Espejo Conesa ([email protected]).
Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions. For research and academic posts, eligibility under the Global Talent visa will also be considered.
