Sign in Create an accountAt Liverpool John Moores University, our students thrive because of the people who teach, guide, and inspire them. Every year, our commitment to exceptional education attracts talented students from across the UK and the world. Driven by our continued growth in student numbers and our commitment to delivering outstanding learning, teaching, and research opportunities, we are expanding our academic community.
The School of Humanities and Social Science is an innovative and distinct school leading education within five subject areas: English Literature, History, Media, Culture and Communication, Sociology and International Relations and Politics. Blending cutting-edge research with innovative teaching and engagement with practitioners, the curriculum is vibrant, student focused and centred on contemporary debates and issues.
The International Relations and Politics programme area sits within the People, Politics and Communication department. Following the highly successful introduction of an MA in International Relations in 2017, LJMU started an undergraduate programme in International Relations and Politics in 2019. As part of our strategic expansion, we are also running two new UG degree programmes: one in Criminology and International Relations and the other in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.
We are seeking to appoint two Lecturers in Politics/International Relations with programme responsibilities who can teach on several modules related to our degrees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The role also involves contributing to teaching at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels more broadly, as needed.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and delivering high-quality teaching.
- Contributing to programme development and academic leadership.
- Producing impactful research and/or knowledge exchange.
- Undertaking administrative roles as directed by the International Relations and Politics area leader, Head of People, Politics and Communication department, or Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (awarded or near completion), with a clear research trajectory aligned with politics and/or international relations, along with experience of teaching at undergraduate level or delivering professional training.
Whilst not essential, we are interested in hearing from those with research and teaching interests in at least one or more of these themes:
- European Politics that talks to International Relations Theory
- Political Economy that talks to Climate Change/Environmental Politics
- Digital Politics/Politics or International Relations in a Digital Age
The People, Politics and Communication department brings together International Relations and Politics, Media, Culture and Communication, and Sociology. Colleagues are members of the Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research (CSPR), and we would expect the successful candidate to contribute to its work and to develop teaching that attracts students across the department.
We value and invest in our staff, offering meaningful opportunities for professional development, scholarship support, and clear internal promotion routes. Benefits include:
- A low contractual 35-hour week
- Generous annual leave entitlement and Christmas period closure with the option to purchase additional annual leave
- Excellent pension scheme
- Access to an Employee Assistance Programme
- Family friendly policies
- Car and travel loan schemes
We would particularly encourage applications from women, ethnically diverse groups, LGBTQ+ groups, and disabled people. The University is proud of its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Informal enquiries about the role may be directed to Dr Matthew Alan Hill ([email protected]), International Relations and Politics Area Lead. For other enquiries, contact [email protected].
